Francisco Oliveira – On The Act Of Reminding

Francisco Oliveira – On The Act Of Reminding
by Raquel Pinheiro
On The Act Of Reminding is Francisco Oliveiraâs debut solo record. Oliveira is a member of Terebentina, Holoscene 85′ and Deepbreathers. This record couldnât be further from Terebentinaâs in your face tumultuous, assaulting chaos of sudden stops and frantic noisy delirious emotions. Although it is closer to some of Holoscene 85â works, but in a stripped down fashion.
Magical simplicity at its best is what is on offer in On The Act Of Reminding. The album was recorded and produced by Francisco Oliveira that mostly used an old upright piano from his grandmotherâs house that has not been played or tuned in over 20 years. Its five instrumental themes are ethereal, evoking northern mystical forests, placid streams and the wilderness.
However, those are not Franciscoâs evocations/memories. To him, the old piano recalls his cousins, uncles and his grandmother. To me, the piano also has family connotations: the music room of the house of one of my maternal grandmotherâs cousins by the sea, with its two upright pianos â tuned and much played, and the roomâs view into a magnificent garden.
Autumnal beauty could describe On The Act Of Reminding even if it was released in July. It is a timeless and seasonless record, in which the untuned piano is used sparsely and with restrain, at times with the same key(s) looped to construct precious musical gems that Luiza Limaâs violin subtly punctuates or exalts. All five themes, numbered /1 to /5 are enchanted, making it hard to pick favourites. /3 more rich tones and fullness and /4 mechanical/industrial penchant stand out, but my absolute preference goes to /5 classic gentle beauty.

Alright Ghandi, Candelabro, Â Porto, 25.07.2018.

Alright Ghandiâs concert was the perfect one for a grey, misty late afternoon in Porto. The Berlin based trio presented their sophomore album Somewhere Else. Somewhere Else is an album filled with gentle pop songs, at times a little melancholic. Life it translates into a much more upbeat, rock sound with with a jazz undertones, thanks to Dominick Grayâs breaks and rhythms.
If on record Rosa Mercedes’ voice is evocative of Laura Veirs one, life it projects a different vibe, still remaining gentle, but also, at times, cheerful. And cheerfulness, even, at a point, Rosa said she wasnât in a good mood â broke by the audience liveliness and joy, was not missing in Alright Ghandiâs concert.
Her bass, along with Pietro Fornaraâs guitar, as well as his backing vocals, allow for a layered colourful mosaic of music. Towards the end, the mood in the room was so bright with people dancing and clapping that Rosa and Pietro come and played from the audience facing Dominick, and having as much as a time good time as anyone else in the room.
