Old Man Lizard a power trio from Sudbury, UK closed the evening last Saturday at Woodstock 69. Interestingly their helmsman, vocalist and guitarist Jack Newnham is also the drummer of Londoners Slabdraggerr, that performed January past at Woodstock 69 in a concert that remained in the audience’s memory because it was momentarily interrupted by the police due to the neighbours complaining the sound was too loud. This time things went well and without trouble.
The Old Man Lizard play stoner/sludge/ doom in a very rock’n’roll way. It was with great pleasure that, listening to their already wide Bandcamp discography, I noticed in the composition of their themes many influences from surf music, country and rock’n’roll in a very subtle way, brief surgical moments, which, in my opinion, raised the quality of this project to the level and status of interesting band to discover and keep track of its future path. Throughout the week I enjoyed a lot of what I heard as I didn’t know them at all. Because of that my expectations were, lets say high for this first concert in Porto (they had previously played in Barcelos and Lisboa with the Greengo brothers as opening act).
I enjoyed their concert, it was good and nice. Below my expectations, but able to have the right length and, musically speaking, providing many intense and interesting moments. Now, having seen them live, I will say that Old Man Lizard has a lighter performance than their discography shows, as far as dark intensity is concerned. There is a sort of hidden joke how they play their themes live, with the rock’n’roll old school and fun side in themes that are dense and raw in nature. I liked them enough not to forget Old Man Lizard when their name surfaces in the future.
At the end of the show, exchanging a few words with a friendly Jack Newnham, we remembered in a playful way the above mentioned Slabdragger’s concert, as well as Old Man’s joy for playing in Portugal for the first time, as opposed to England, where their music scene does not seem to be strong or generating much public interest in the band’s sound. They’re good, hope they soon return to Portugal.

Encerraram as hostilidades no Woodstock 69, na noite de sábado passado, os Old Man Lizard, um power trio de Sudbury, no Reino Unido. Como curiosidade, tem, como timoneiro, o vocalista e guitarrista Jack Newnham, que é também o baterista dos londrinos Slabdraggerr, que atuaram em Janeiro deste ano no bar de Campanhã, num concerto de boa memória para todos os presentes, por ter sido interrompido momentaneamente pela polícia, devido à queixa de vizinhos por o som estar demasiadamente alto. Desta vez correu tudo bem, sem qualquer incidente.

Os Old Man Lizard praticam uma sonoridade stoner/sludge/doom, mas de uma forma muito rock’n’roll. Foi com bastante agrado, que, na escuta da sua já extensa discografia no Bandcamp, constatei na composição dos seus temas, muitas influências da surf music, do country e do rock’n’roll de forma genérica, colocados muito subtilmente, feitos momentos breves e cirúrgicos, o que, na minha opinião, eleva a qualidade deste projeto para o nível e estatuto de banda interessante para se descobrir e acompanhar o seu trajeto futuro. Gostei de muito do que ouvi deles ao longo da semana, já que não conhecia o grupo, de todo. Devido a isso as minhas expetativas eram, digamos, elevadas para este seu primeiro concerto no Porto (nos dias anteriores tinham atuado em Barcelos e Lisboa, com o suporte dos irmãos Greengo).

Gostei deste seu concerto, foi bom e simpático. Abaixo das minhas expetativas, mas com o condão de ter a duração certa de atuação e de ter proporcionado muitos momentos intensos e interessantes, musicalmente falando. Direi agora, depois de os ter visto ao vivo, que os Old Man Lizard tem uma atuação mais light do que a sua discografia faz transparecer, no que a intensidade obscura diz respeito. Há neles como que uma piada escondida na forma como interpretam os seus temas ao vivo, com esse lado rock’n’roll old school e fun, em temas que são densos e crus por natureza. Gostei o suficiente deles para não me esquecer dos Old Man Lizard quando o seu nome vier à tona no futuro.

Trocando algumas palavras no final da atuação, com um simpático Jack Newnham, recordamos de forma divertida o concerto dos Slabdragger que mencionei acima, e também do contentamento dos Old Man em atuar pela primeira vez em Portugal, em contraponto com Inglaterra, onde a sua cena musical não aparenta ser forte, ou que gere muito interesse público para com a sonoridade da banda. Que regressem em breve a Portugal, são bons.

Greengo + Old Man Lizard, Woodstock 69, Porto, 24.08.2019 – part 1 Greengo

To watch a Greengo concert is always a great pleasure. They are one of the Portuguese bands I’ve seen more often live in the last two years and they’ve never disappointed me. Quite the opposite quite the contrary, I can always find new reasons of interest when analyzing their fantastic sound. Throughout their performance some moments carry me to other past memories, metal / industrial spectrum bands, lost in the maelstrom of time that left a mark in me at different time periods. I rediscover them in many moments of the duo’s sound, as if they were replayed in a revitalizing way with much better quality and precision. Greengo have a brutal and devastating sound, of the best ever made in Portugal (at any time or musical style). If you think this harsh, heavy sound is uncomfortable or unpleasant to the ears, don’t be fooled. It is precisely that small great detail that sets them miles apart from their counterparts of the same musical aesthetic (stoner/slulde/doom/metal/ psychedelic). Greengo sound pleasantly, colossally, huge, and have the right rhythmic speed for our brains to become “hypnotize” right away. Perhaps that the greatest virtue of their sound.

This concert at Campanhã’s bar was, in such regard, no different from all their other concerts I saw. They are the typical case of a band that works only in the sense of music for the music. There are no performative or scenic distractions in their show, just contagious energy and exemplary professionalism of both musicians. Greengo music is everything, and it is also a lot.

After the show, in an informal chat with the duo – Chaka (drums) and Rui Pedro Martelo (bass/vocals) I was told they would be playing in England this week with Old Man Lizard (Londres, Colchester, Coventry and Banbury). It is the best one can wish them. Such a band needs to leave Portugal and undergo the whole international circuit of their music scene in a regular and persistent way. I always wonder why, in Portugal, I only see them opening for foreign bands. In reality, at the end, when things have to be measured Greengo are far better. The answer that to me seems the obvious is that they have only released a single (the excellent Dabstep, 2018, by Raging Planet), while the bands they supported have wider discography and have been around for longer. I wish them a swift release of their debut album.

Greengo are an on the road band, preferably outside Portugal, spreading our best. Go Greengo Go!

(Re)ver os Greengo em concerto é sempre um enorme prazer. É das bandas portuguesas que mais repeti ao vivo nestes dois últimos anos e nunca me desiludiram, muito pelo contrário, consigo encontrar sempre renovados motivos de interesse na análise ao seu fantástico som. Momentos há, ao longo do seu espetáculo, que me transportam para outras memórias passadas, feitas bandas no espectro metal/industrial, perdidas na voragem do tempo, que me marcaram em períodos temporais distintos, e redescubro-as em muitos momentos da sonoriedade do duo portuense, como que reinterpretadas de uma forma revitalizadora e com muito mais qualidade e acerto. Os Greengo tem um som brutal e demolidor, do melhor que já se fez alguma vez aqui pelo retângulo (em qualquer época e estilo musical). Mas engane-se quem pense que este som agreste e pesado é incómodo ou desagradável aos ouvidos. É precisamente nesse pequeno grande pormenor que ficam a milhas de distância em relação a outros congéneres seus dentro de mesma estética musical (stoner/slulde/doom/metal/psicadélico). Os Greengo soam agradavelmente bem, de forma colossal, enorme, e tem uma velocidade ritmíca correta para os nossos cérebros se deixarem “hipnotizar” de imediato. Talvez seja essa a grande virtude do seu som.

Este seu concerto no bar de Campanhã não foi, nesse sentido, diferente de todos os outros a que assisti deles. São o tipíco caso de um grupo que funciona apenas no registo de música pela música. Não há distrações performativas ou cénicas no seu espetáculo, apenas a energia contagiante e o profissionalismo exemplar de entrega dos seus dois músicos. A música dos Greengo é tudo, e é também muito.

Em conversa informal, após o final da atuação, com os seus dois elementos, Chaka (bateria) e Rui Pedro Martelo (baixo e voz), fiquei a saber que já durante esta semana estarão em Inglaterra para vários concertos com os Old Man Lizard (em Londres, Colchester, Coventry e Banbury). É o melhor que se pode desejar ao duo, pois uma banda como esta precisa de sair obrigatoriamente para fora de Portugal e fazer todo o circuito internacional da sua cena musical de uma forma regular e persistente. Questiono-me sempre porque é que aqui só os vejo a fazer primeiras partes de bandas estrangeiras, quando na realidade os Greengo são bem melhores, quando no final há que fazer o balanço. A resposta que me parece a mais óbvia é o de contarem apenas com um único álbum editado (o excelente Dabstep, de 2018, pela Raging Planet), enquanto que as bandas a que fizeram suporte tem já uma discografia mais extensa e de mais anos de formação. Que o seu segundo longa duração veja urgentemente a luz do dia, é o que lhes desejo, portanto.

Os Greengo são banda para estar na estrada, e de preferência, para fora de Portugal, a divulgar o que temos de bom. Go, Greengo, Go!
