The Reading List – Francisco Silva

The second Reading List comprises reading choices by my friend, at times co-songwriter, and fellow avid reader Francisco Silva. Francisco laid to rest his old (pun intended) music composition Old Jerusalem and has been taking off in new directions with The June Carriers and Velho Homem. In Francisco’s own words.
Some of my musical reading material.
Warren Ellis – Nina Simone’s Gum: A Memoir of Things Lost and Found is a picaresque story of the amulet engendered by Warren Ellis as an excuse to digress about music, creativity, humanity, etc.
Whyndam Wallace – Lee, Myself & I: Inside The Very Special World Of Lee Hazlewood is Lee Hazlewood’s life story as retold by his former manager, journalist Wyndham Wallace.
Bruce Adams – You’re With Stupid, the Chicago scene and the Kranky label by the quill of one of its founders, Bruce Adams.
Various – Rock Rendez Vous the photos of the iconic Lisbon club (and the portrait of an era).Rob Young – Electric Eden a detailed and multifaceted story of British folk music and its context.
Harold F. Eggers – My years with Townes van Zandt: Music, Genius and Rage” – the uncanny account of Harold F. Eggers’ time as road manager to Townes van Zandt in his prime and beyond it – an assignment that only a Vietnam veteran could tackle.
Ian Preece – Listening to the Wind: Encounters with 21st Century Independent Record Labels. Interviews and profiling of some of the most interesting (obscure?) independent record labels of our time: Light In The Attic, Thrill Jockey, International Anthem, Touch, Sublime Frequencies, Temporary Residence, Important, Paradise of Bachelors, Scissor Tail, among others.
… and two extraordinary graphic novels: the hitherto rare Storyville by Frank Santoro and the amazing Rusty Brown (but it could also be the just as beautiful – if not more so – Jimmy Corrigan) by Chris Ware.

Steve Albini – Rest in Power

Some news take us by surprise. Steve Albini unexpected death yesterday was one of them. Maverick studio engineer and recorder, master of poker, inspiration.
I’ve interviewed Steve a couple of times for print Mondo and Público. I still remember the Mondo one. It was done by email and it had a good deal of Steve Albini the cartoon character. Lots of f words and other less than stellar language. The interview in itself was very good. When I was asked if I could arrange an interview for Público my reply was “I’ll ask. But if he (Steve) starts being rude, I’ll say this interview ends here”. There was no rudeness. Steve was drinking tea in his kitchen and was a perfect gentleman.
So far, one of my two of my radio shows fully dedicated to someone also on the other side of things was The Steve Albini edition.

Of late friends and I had been talking about Steve Albini. His recordings, his work, his high standards. But also how he managed to talk in layperson language and didn’t shy from taking another engineer with him of he deemed necessary. I quite like this podcast interview about the Manic Street Preachers’ Journal For Plagued Lovers. In fact, I was listening to it before my first rehearsal with Grupo Operário do Ruído (Workers Noise Group), less than a month ago. It has to be The Universe. https://www.buzzsprout.com/450409/14899
And, of course, there is the (in)famous The Problem With Music Text written in 1993 that remains as relevant as by then https://thebaffler.com/salvos/the-problem-with-musicShellac have a new album To All Trains coming out on the 17t.h. Along with all the other music played, created and recorded by Steve is will be part of his legacy and inspiration to many of us.
Rest in Power, Steve. And in poker.

SDH, Mouco, Porto, 04.05.2024.

It seemed everyone was already waiting to shake their hips to SDH frantic rhythm, since that happened from the start. The powerful loops and samples continuously blasting throughout the room that had enough space for improvised dancing. The Barcelona duo’s (Andrea Latorre e Sergi Algiz) synth pop a la discoteque, even if mixed with some industrial experimentism and a sparkle of dark wave is an invitation to dancing.
Andrea dances throughout with goth-dancer mannerisms and sensuality in her gestures. The very creative and pertiment always changing set design, mixed with the overhaul dark ambient and the frantic colourful lights did the rest. Very funny.

They showered the submissive audience with an energetic and progressive set going around tracks like No Miracles, Tell Them, Balance e obviamente, and the always expected Hectic. I’m not going home. The warm up worked very well and I will go around city alleys looking for sige sound franticness. I think I know where to go.
