Amazing Songs & Other Delights #27 – The Anniversary edition by Raquel & The Astro Travelers is now listenable at @ Yé Yé Radio’s mixcloud. Tracklist below the text.

The Anniversary edition is comprised of songs and instrumentals symbolizing both parts of the programme’s name: songs & other delights (instrumentals and everything else that is not a song, song). The songs are either premieres When Joe Came By written by Francisco Silva (Old Jerusalem) and I, Santa Eulália by The Lone Ranger (João Diogo Zagalo’s – of Silver&Scout – solo project), It’s a Feeling You Can’t ide by Bill Rivers plus a handfull of songs chosen by the show guest over the year and a few other friends that they either though I would like or match me.

The instrumentals are a trove of wonders. Purpose created ones, from the vaulst ,still unrealed, reWorks, premieres and a jazz classic. Alex FX, Francisco Silva & Paulo Miranda, João Diogo Zagalo, Paulo Navarro, Sci Fi Industries, Hidden Horse, digei de bairro (Pedro Tenreiro), Carlos Fortes, myself and Donald Byrd provide those.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #25 is The Bernard Butler edition.

It pairs with The Steve Albini edition that was broadcast a fortnight ago. From Suede to Bert Jansch through Duffy, Black Kids, Mark Eitzel, Pet Shop Boys and Bernard’s latest collaboration with Jessie Buckley (Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler with songs written and played by Bernard in a 1950s Gibson tuned in DADGAD ) the show has 17 songs – one of them the same, I’m Tired in its original 1998 vocals and its 2021 vocals that I particularly relate to – that showcase Bernard’s work as a songwriter, guitarist, producer. When considering which photo to use to illustrate this post Victoria Wai’s photo of Bernard in Gosford, this past January come to mind.

For me the photo has several meanings, triumph over adversity, defiance, gratitude, humbleness, laying oneself bare, as the way Bernard played his song in December 2021 and early 2022, which requires both vulnerability and strength.

Like with Steve Albini I’ve learned a lot from Bernard and felt inspired by him. Francisco Silva (Old Jerusalem) and I even put some of Bernard’s collaborative songwriting ideas and tips to good use and wrote a collaborative song. Since, again, I don’t want to write the longest post ever, I’ll let the songs speak for themselves. And, yes that famous 1961 cherry red Gibson ES-355 features in several of them.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #24 the Steve Albini edition can now be listened to on Yé Yé’s radio mixcloud. Of the many records recorded by Steve Albini or those of his bands, I selected 17 songs. The result is a not so obvious “produced by Steve Albini” choice.

The first season of the year is the last to be covered on Amazing Songs & Other Delights since the show started in late May 2021. Obviosuly, it is called the Spring edition. The songs either are Sping song, in the sense Spring is part of the title or lyrics, or have a Spring feeling to it. Amazing Songs & Other Delights #23 – The Spring edition include Blue Moon Rose by Everything But The Girl, Is This Love by Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, April Come She Will Simon & Garfunkel and a less usual cover o Antônio Carlos Jobim’s Águas de Março – see tracklist. The beautiful Telecaster that illustrates this show belongs to Carlos Fortes (Mão Morta/um zero amarelo). Carlos and I picked 25 songs played/written with a Telecaster or predominantly played/written with one, including two of his – Sem Perdão by Um Zero Amarelo chosen by him and Budapeste by Mão Morta chosen by me. Our 25 songs include Prince’s iconic Hohner Madcat Telecaster, Carlos’ own Fender Telecaster with custom build Bula pickup and 5-position switch installation, also from the hands of Bula – a friend of Carlos who custom builds pickups. Telecasters with B-Benders are also represented. We included a variety of players and eras to showcase the History and versatility of the Telecaster and created over one and an half hour of songs with a Telecaster and those who play it. Amazing Songs & Other Delights #18 The Wintry Songs edition a collaborative songs picking between António Cunha (Rua do Gin/um zero amarelo) and myself is now on mixcloud. Every season so far had its show, Winter could not be left behind. A while ago Antonio posted Billy Mackenzie’s Winter Academy which become the starting point for this show. He then sent me over 20 songs for I to choose from and weave my choices along with. The final result is ecletic, beautiful and very wintry. It ranges from Clinic to FINNEAS with enough room for John Parish, Pink Floyd, Zoot Woman, The Decemberists or The Beatles.
