The 14th Amazing Songs & Other Delights is called The Gentle, Folk, Autumnal edition and airs tomorrow, Monday 22nd, 3-4pm (London time) on Yé Yé radio: https://yeyeradio.com/ (or on the app). It could also be also be called The Family, Friends, Acquaintances & Muses Edtion since there are 16 songs by family members, friends, and muses as in musicians/singer-songwriters I get inspiration from/inspire me. One of those is Karen Dalton. Interestingly, the documentary Karen Dalton: In My Own Time by Richard Peete, Robert Yapkowtiz is shown tomorrow here in Porto at Porto/Post/Doc. There will be songs by Nuno Prata, Bill Callahan or Isabel Silvestre and a couple of instrumentals.

It was a joint creation between myself, Daniel Blaufuks, Fred Somsen Amândio Barbosa and Carlos Fortes. It was done for Licas (Luís Saraiva) drummer of Jovem Guarda and Pop Dell’Arte who died 35 years ago on the 4th of November . Amazing Songs & Other Delights #13 airs tomorrow, 3-4pm on Yé Yé Radio. It is called The Smile On Your Face (Songs for Licas) is another in memoriam show. The choice of songs is a mix of songs from bands he liked and songs/bands/artists we thought he may like.
On the tracklist choices, where two names exist, the first picked the band/artist, the second the song. The songs I selected are either of mourning, Funeral Blues, or songs that reminded me of him, how I have him on my 1986 diaries. Licas, and his unique way of being, also appears in Daniel’s Lisboa Clichê.
For the show, I assemble the songs in alphabetical order. At first glance, it seemed to make sense. Together, it works, and sounds very good. It starts with songs from after his passing, goes through bands he liked, an instrumental from Jovem Guarda and a Pop Dell’Arte song (that he did not record, but for me is Licas, has his groove, joy and liveliness), to a lament, the aforementioned Funeral Blues, continuing with a selection of songs from bands he appreciated and others he may enjoy.
It is a special and emotional edition, filled with amazing songs, other delights, lots of love and saudades.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #11 – The Kick & Backbeat are 22 songs and one instrumental with druns, and, or percussion, and drummers in mind and can now be found on Yé Yé’s mixcloud – tracklist below. I mixed things a little. Some drummers are not playing with their main band, or the band they become known for ( Simon Gilbert), here with Futon rather than Suede), others are playing a little differently than what is usually thought of them (Dave Grohl). A couple or so aren’t even seen as drummers, or drumming is not the first thing that comes to mind when thinking of them – Josh Homme, Mick Harvey. All in all I choose songs I like, with drummers I like. A few of those that are important to me are missing, Pete de Freitas, John Convertino, etc. The start of the show is the late Charlie Watts, that has a double appearance. And nothing like a fabulous yellow (my favourite colour) drum kit to make it all brighter and, well, drummy. 🙂 Rui Pimenta & Pedro Tenreiro allowed me to push the envelope and come up with an a hour and a half show. 😃

Songs in which drums drive or sustain the song. There will be 23 songs to listen to from an assortement of bands/drummers. Previous shows can be found on the radio’s mixcloud.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #11 is called The Kick & Backbeat edition and it is all about the drums and the men and women behind them. It is longer than usual, at nearly 90 minutes and it airs tomorrow, Monday 11th, 2:35-4pm (London time) @ Yé Yé Radio.

From Charlie Watts to Maureen Tucker, through Samuel Palitos, J.D. Samson, Mick Joyce, Ginger Baker or Janet Weiss there are 23 songs to be listened to.

This show was a long time coming. The possibility of interviewing Simon Gilbert propelled it and Charlie Watts’ death sealed it. Drummers have a special place in my heart. It was a jazz drummer, Lino Oliveira, who taught me pretty much everyting I know music wise – but, for classic music and music theory. A little later, in 1986, it was another drummer, Carlos Moura, who helped me with my bass and a few other things.

There are beloved dummers missing, like Pete de Freitas of Echo & The Bunnymen. The show is not meant to be a “best drummers” one. Rather, a showcase of drums in songs, be it songs driver by drums or with drums more in the background. And a selection of good songs with drums and, or, percussion that I like.

The beautiful yellow drum kit in the photo is Val di Fiemme kit and was made by Andrew Johnston of RePercussion Drums.
