International Music Day 2025 – My Song Choices

Euterpe the muse of Music and Lyric Poetry

Today is International Music Day. I selected three songs from different time periods and genres. Cantigas do Maio by José Afonso, Der Erlkönig by Franz Schubert, and my favourite song Will You Love Me Tomorrow sung by the Shirelles.

Cantigas do Maio is from the fifth album by Portuguese musician, composer, singer, songwriter 1971 album Cantigas do Maio. A beautiful song, in which the voice starts gentle, develops a frantic tone, then quiets, then rises again, and ends quiet.

Cantigas do Maio:
Eu fui ver a minha amada
Lá p’rós baixos dum jardim
Eu fui ver a minha amada
Lá p’rós baixos dum jardim
Dei-lhe uma rosa encarnada
Para se lembrar de mim
Dei-lhe uma rosa encarnada
Para se lembrar de mim

Eu fui ver o meu benzinho
Lá p’rós lados dum passal
Eu fui ver o meu benzinho
Lá p’rós lados dum passalFeatures
Dei-lhe o meu lenço de linho
Que é do mais fino bragal
Dei-lhe o meu lenço de linho
Que é do mais fino bragal

Minha mãe, quando eu morrer
Minha mãe, quando eu morrer
Ai, chore por quem muito amargou
Ai, chore por quem muito amargou
Para então dizer ao mundo
Para então dizer ao mundo
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou

Eu fui ver uma donzela
Numa barquinha a dormir
Eu fui ver uma donzela
Numa barquinha a dormir
Dei-lhe uma colcha de seda
Para nela se cobrir
Dei-lhe uma colcha de seda
Para nela se cobrir

Eu fui ver uma solteira
Numa salinha a fiar
Eu fui ver uma solteira
Numa salinha a fiar
Dei-lhe uma rosa vermelha
Para de mim se encantar
Dei-lhe uma rosa vermelha
Para de mim se encantar

Minha mãe, quando eu morrer
Minha mãe, quando eu morrer
Ai, chore por quem muito amargou
Ai, chore por quem muito amargou
Para então dizer ao mundo
Para então dizer ao mundo
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou

Eu fui ver a minha amada
Lá nos campos, eu fui ver
Eu fui ver a minha amada
Lá nos campos, eu fui ver
Dei-lhe uma rosa encarnada
Para de mim se prender
Dei-lhe uma rosa encarnada
Para de mim se prender

Verdes prados, verdes campos
Onde está minha paixão?
Verdes prados, verdes campos
Onde está minha paixão?
As andorinhas não param
Umas voltam, outras não
As andorinhas não param
Umas voltam, outras não

Minha mãe, quando eu morrer
Minha mãe, quando eu morrer
Ai, chore por quem muito amargou
Ai, chore por quem muito amargou
Para então dizer ao mundo
Para então dizer ao mundo
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou
Ai Deus m’o deu
Ai Deus m’o levou

My favourite song Will You Love Me Tomorrow, also known as Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow, written by Carole King and Gerry Goffin, first recorded by The Shirelles in 1960.

Will You Love Me Tomorrow:
Tonight you’re mine completely
You give your love so sweetly
Tonight the light of love is in your eyes
But will you love me tomorrow?
Is this a lasting treasure
Or just a moment’s pleasure?
Can I believe the magic of your sighs?
Will you still love me tomorrow?
Tonight with words unspoken
You say that I’m the only one
But will my heart be broken
When the night (when the night)
Meets the morning (meets the morning) sun?
I’d like to know that your love
Is a love I can be sure of
So tell me now, and I won’t ask again
Will you still love me tomorrow?
So tell me now, and I won’t ask again
Will you still love me tomorrow?
Will you still love me tomorrow?
Will you still love me?

And Der Erlkönig by Franz Schubert, with a ballade written by Johann Wolfgang in 1782. Here sung by baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau accompanied by pianist Gerald Moore. Haunting, chilling, Dietrich sings the three voices, child, father, Erlkönig with deep emotion and such tonal variation it leaves you mesmerized. And the final line, In seinen Armen das Kind war tot (In your arms the child is lies dead) is arrowing.

Der Erlkönig:
Wer reitet so spät durch Nacht und Wind?
Es ist der Vater mit seinem Kind;
Er hat den Knaben wohl in dem Arm,
Er fasst ihn sicher, er hält ihn warm.

Mein Sohn, was birgst du so bang dein Gesicht? –
Siehst, Vater, du den Erlkönig nicht?
Den Erlenkönig mit Kron’ und Schweif? –
Mein Sohn, es ist ein Nebelstreif. –

„Du liebes Kind, komm, geh mit mir!
Gar schöne Spiele spiel’ ich mit dir;
Manch’ bunte Blumen sind an dem Strand,
Meine Mutter hat manch gülden Gewand.“ –

Mein Vater, mein Vater, und hörest du nicht,
Was Erlenkönig mir leise verspricht? –
Sei ruhig, bleibe ruhig, mein Kind;
In dürren Blättern säuselt der Wind. –

„Willst, feiner Knabe, du mit mir gehn?
Meine Töchter sollen dich warten schön;

„Ich liebe dich, mich reizt deine schöne Gestalt;
Und bist du nicht willig, so brauch’ ich Gewalt.“ –
Mein Vater, mein Vater, jetzt fasst er mich an!
Erlkönig hat mir ein Leids getan! –

Dem Vater grauset’s; er reitet geschwind,
Er hält in Armen das ächzende Kind,
Erreicht den Hof mit Mühe und Not;
In seinen Armen das Kind war tot.

The Grandeur of Ghosts by Siegfried Sassoon

When I have heard small talk about great men
I light my two candles; climb to bed; then
Consider what was said; and put aside
What Such-a-one remarked, and Someone-else replied.

They have spoken lightly of my deathless friends,
(Lamps for my gloom, hands guiding where I stumble,)
Quoting, for shallow conversational ends,
What Shelley shrilled, what Blake once wildly muttered…

How can they use such names and be not humble ?
I have sat silent; angry at what they uttered.
The dead bequeathed them life; the dead have said
What these can only memorise and mumble.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #64 – The Grandeur of Ghosts edition by Raquel Pinheiro @ Rádio Yé Yé, Monday 22nd

The Grandeur of Ghosts is the name of a poem by Sigfried Sassoon, one of World War One (WWI) poets. As WWI continue, Siegfried start to see it as conflict prolonged by those in power who had no regard for everyone else, soldiers or civilians. A reality that has been repeated before and since. My country, Portugal, was a dictatorship from 1928 to April 25 1974. This year 50 years of democracy are celebrated. During the dictatorship Portugal was engaged in a Colonial war from 1961 to 1974. Many young men, my dad included were sent to it. Many men, my dad included, would leave the war and go to exile, only being allowed to return a few years after the end of the dictatorship. The songs and poems on this programme are from various countries, in different languages, addressing different wars or connected to the coup d’etat that ended Estado Novo, the Portuguese dictatorship.E Depois do Adeus that had won Festival da Canção in 1974 had no censurable lyrics and was the first signal for the troops to know it was ok to star move towards Lisboa and depose the regimen. It was played at 22:25 hours on April 24 on Emissores Associados de Lisboa. Grândola Vila Morena, the second signal, greenlighting the go ahead was played at 00:20 hours on Rádio Renascença. Red carnations are the symbol of 25 de Abril commonly called A Revolução dos Cravos (The Carnations Revolution).

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #60 – The A Family Affair edition by Gaia, Renato & Raquel Pinheiro by Gaia, Renato & Raquel Pinheiro – Monday 26 @ Radio Yé Yé.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #60 The A Family Affair edition by Gaia, Renato & Raquel Pinheiro airs tomorrow Monday, 26th , 3-4pm (gmt) on Yé Yé Radio: yeyeradio.com (or on the app).

The A Family edition programme has songs by brother Renato and I sing together, through WhatsApp, including my niece, Gaïa, favourite song: Canção de Embalar by José Afonso.

My brother and Iive over a thousand kilometers apart. We made good use of the fairies of technology. He is usually on speaker, strumming his Takamine or unplugged Les Paul model and singing, I’m not on speaker and or may not, be stunning my, unplugged, Strat model., and singing. Or humming the bass line.

The Beatles grace this post since they are a family affair. Our mum and her sisters, who were teenagers and young women in the 60s,lovec them. The first sing our parents dance to was a Beatles song. As a child I saw Yellow Submarine at least once a year on a movie theater, aming with every time it was shown on television. Help would be another much seen film.

There are two bands with two songs on the programe. The Beatles and Blur. We sing many Beatles and Blur songs. My niece loves Coffee & TV and its video. There is also the most Beatlesnesque song ever, not written by the Beatles, Oasis’ Don’t Look Back In Anger.
