We went to the press rehearsal of Esquecimento Global (Global Forgetness) a purpose written play with libretto by Luca Argel and José Nunes, music by Luca Argel for Teatro Municipal de Matosinhos Constantino Nery.
Esquecimento Global is based on The Threepenny Opera by Bertolt Brecht with music by Kurt Weill, and A Ópera do Malandro by Chico Buarque.
Esquecimento Global is a tragic-comedy set in current times – it was written just a few months ago – in which a love story meets social and political critique.
We will soon have a more thorough preview of the play.
Esquecimento Global is performed Novembro 06 & 07, 9:30pm; 08, 4pm
Penelope and the Ducks – Underwater Woman: Swimming In The Sea
My Amazing Songs & Other Delights #101 – Oceanic edition is broadcasted Monday 19 & 26 October, 3-4pm (London time) on Yé Yé Radio: yeyeradio.com to (or on the app).
I return to ocean swimming late May and have kept it, including going to the ocean at night. At night, usually, given the conditions to walk along the shoreline, but, sometimes the water is good enough for a nightswim.
As R.E.M.’s song say that appears in the programme says “Nightswimming deserves a quiet night, deserves a quiet night”.
Preceding R.E.M. are Queens of The Stone Age with I Sat By The Ocean. Underwater Songs are Luís Figueiredo & Manuel Rocha, a voice and piano duo that is releasing their second album Underwater Songs Vol. 2 in November.
There’s Sétimo Legião with Sete Mares, Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds’ The Ship Song, Charles Trenet with La mer.
The Who bring Sea And Sand from Quadrophenia, The Velvet Underground, arrive with Ocean, The Shins walk with Sea Legs, Van Morrison’s Into The Mystic brings an otherworldly dimension.
Amalia Rodrigues singing Canção do Mar, and Chico Buarque with Mar e Lua bring deep emotion and longing.
Bernard Butler appears twice. The Sea (Edit), a b-side from Stay, a single from his debut album People Moved On, and Camber Sands from his third album Good Grief.
The closing is for the Beatles with the joyous Octopus’ Garden.

My radio show Amazing Songs & Other Delights # 93 – And The Circus Came & Left Town edition is broadcasted Monday February 16 & 23, 3-4pm (London time) on Yé Yé Radio: yeyeradio.com (or on the app).
Monday February 14 is Carnival Day. Amazing Songs & Other Delights # 93 – And The Circus Came & Left Town edition combines carnival, fair, fetes, rodeo songs, or songs that mention those things with the circus, the carny, arriving and leaving.
The programme titles comes from Bert Jansch’s When the Circus Comes to Town and Kyuss’ … And The Circus Leaves Town. Interestingly, both albums were released in 1995.
There’s a fair deal of my beloved Elvis, three songs, enough Chico Buarque and Bert Jansch, two songs each.
Bert is essentially the starting point of this show. I’ve only recently found Jackson C. Frank, through the book Dazzling Stranger: Bert Jansch and the British Folk and Blues Revival, and marvelled.
I came up with another of mine apparently implausible to make sense of such diverse type of songs and genres. Feira Popular, Chic, The Magnetic Fields, Kyuss, The Smiths and others keep company to Elvis, Bert, Chico, Jackson C. in a lively, but with sorrow here and there under an upbeat tune, programme.
Also featured is Gary Lucas’ – Live Score for The Chase Scene of Tod Browning’s 1932 film Freaks. And David Bowie’s Ashes To Ashes, for Ash Wednesday.
