Summer is around the corner in the Northern Hemisphere, the 2026 World Cup is on. The Of Summer & Football edition has nineteen songs and one instrumental that speak of both. The Summer songs aren’t all necessarily season specific.

The Wedding Present’s Everyone Thinks He Looks Daft of from their  album George Best, Manchester United’s (in)famous right winger

Billy Bragg’s God’s Footballer is about
Peter Knowles a forward of
Wolverhampton Wanderers F.C., better known as Wolves.

John Travolta & Olivia Newton John – Summer Nights classic from the film Greece is a perfect Summer evening dancing song. Along with the surfy Peter Gunn by Duane Eddy.

The Smiths’ Golden Lights is a cover of English singer-songwriter Twinkle’s 1965 single, and in itself as little to do with Summer.

New Order’s World In Motionand Baddiel & Skinner & Lightning Seeds’s  Three Lions where written with England’s National team in mind, while
Belle and Sebastian’s It Only Takes One Lion is their 2026 song for Scotland National team.

As usual on the Summer and Winter programme there’s a cover of The Mamas & the Papas do’ California Dreamin’, this time by José Feliciano.

For some reason I had the programme title for a while. Probably, because of Sea and Cake, the band that opens and closes the show. Since I recently went ocean swim again and I like cake, it was a perfect match. Ideas and life catching and matching up.

The songs and instrumentals aren’t necessarily about cake, sweets, or the ocean, although enough are. Like Savoy Truffle written by George Harrison for The Beatles’ White Album is literally about chocolates, and was written for Eric Clapton and his love  of said sweets. For The Of Sea & Cake edition I picked the live version Dhani Harrison singings his father’s song.

The Beach Boys’ Catch A Wave is another literal song, this time about the ocean and catching a wave to surf.

There’s seventeen songs of different genres and time periods. By new bands and longs established ones. Some of the songs aren’t an obvious Spring choice, but they make sense to me in springtime.

The programme goes from a Spring song for children, The Kiboomers – Ladybugs Fly, to fado with Rita Braga’s tropical interpretation of Amália Rodrigues and Don Byas’ Rua do Capelão.

There’s space for indie songs, Again and Again and Again by Silly Boy Blue, Sun It Rises by Fleet Floxes, Stranger Baby by Gifthorse or Whole Again by Saint Sappho. Along Schubert’s Frühlingsglaube sung by Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, and Test Department with the South Wales Striking Miners Choir singing Take Me Home.

The heavy weights contingent includes  Taylor Swift, The Beatles, The Avett Brothers, and The Kinks.

Of Art & Image edition has 15 songs that refer to art, artists, mostly painters, and image, both still and motion. The Manic Street Preachers have two songs, from Everything Must Go, their fourth album. One for painting, Interiors (Song for Willem de Kooning), and one for photography, Kevin Carter.

Don McLean’s Vincent is based on Vincent Van Gogh’s The Starry Night, while Dire Straits’ In the Gallery is a tribute to sculptor Harry Braun.

Bauhaus and their Bela Lugosi’s Dead are a double reference. The band’s name to the German arts, design, architecture, crafts school, and to Hungarian-American actor Bela Lugosi.
