Amazing Songs & Other Delights #25 is The Bernard Butler edition and airs tomorrow on Yé Yé Radio c3-4:20pm (gmt+1): https://yeyeradio.com/ or on the app. It pairs with The Steve Albini edition that was broadcast a fortnight ago. From Suede to Bert Jansch through Duffy, Black Kids, Mark Eitzel, Pet Shop Boys and Bernard’s latest collaboration with Jessie Buckley (Jessie Buckley & Bernard Butler with songs written and played by Bernard on a 1950s Gibson tuned in DADGAD ) the show has 17 songs – one of them the same, I’m Tired in its original 1998 vocals and its 2021 vocals that I particularly relate to -, that showcase Bernard’s work as a songwriter, guitarist, producer. When considering which photo to use to illustrate this post Victoria Wai’s photo of Bernard in Gosford, this past January come to mind.

For me the photo has several meanings, triumph over adversity, defiance, gratitude, humbleness, laying oneself bare, as the way Bernard played his song in December 2021 and early 2022, which requires both vulnerability and strength. Since the show airs tomorrow and April 25 marks the day the dictatorship ended in Portugal 48 years go, the photo is also par for such important occasion.

Like with Steve Albini I’ve learned a lot from Bernard and felt inspired by him. Francisco Silva (Old Jerusalem) and I even put some of Bernard’s collaborative songwriting ideas and tips to good use and wrote a collaborative song. Since, again, I don’t want to write the longest post ever, I’ll let the songs speak for themselves. And, yes that famous 1961 cherry red Gibson ES-355 features in several of them.

Amazing Songs & Other Delights #24 is the The Steve Albini edition and it airs tomorrow (Monday 11th) c3-4pm (gmt+1) on Yé Yé Radio: https://yeyeradio.com/ or on the app. The Steve Albini editoni is comprised of 17 songs/tracks from Big Black to Shellac through Nina Nastasia, Jimmy Page & Robert Plant, Man or Astro man, The Auteurs, Cinerama and more. Either this would be an extremely long post or I’ll have to curb my entusiasm and try to stick to a few things regarding Steve Albini. So, there it goes, if I had sacred cows or musical heroes, which I do not, Steve Albini would be one of them. I’ve learned a lot with him, felt inspired by him, got to inteview him a couple of times – once, by e-mail, was met with the “Steve Albini cartoon character”, lots of f words and the likes; another time, by phone, it was gentleman Albini, drinking tea in his kitchen, in Chicago. I’ve read and re-read and re-read his The Problem With Music (1993)

Steve owns Electrical Audio, a two-studio complex in Chicago and has recorded hundreds of records. Like the Tele & Strat editions, The Steve Albini edition is a twin show, it pairs with the Bernard Butler edition that airs April 25th.

The first season of the year is the last to be covered on Amazing Songs & Other Delights since the show started in late May 2021. Obviosuly, it is called the Spring edition. The songs either are Sping song, in the sense Spring is part of the title or lyrics, or have a Spring feeling to it.
